Djungarian Campbell Dwarf Hamster
What do they look like
The Djungarian dwarf is also known as the Campbell hamster and was originally found in the Central Asia, China and Siberia. In the wild they tend to be a light gray to gray brown coloring on their back with ivory on their sides and a white underbelly, with a gray strip running down their back. They tend to be about 3 to 4 inches in length when they are full grown.
Campbell’s at times can be very quick moving and of the four kinds of dwarf hamsters, this is the one that most like will bite the hand that feeds them! Having a place where you can view your pet and their fun antics can be quite enjoyable!
Does a Chinese Dwarf Hamster Make a good pet?
If you are considering owning a Chinese dwarf hamster as a pet, it’s best to research as much as you can about them before! They do make interesting pets for children over 12 and adults that prefer to enjoy their pets by observing their behaviors as opposed to picking up and holding them. Not to say that an experienced dwarf hamster owner can’t pick up their pet, just that they are extremely fast and often hard to catch.
Here are some Benefits of owning:
* Their home housing space doesn’t take up alot of room as they don’t require alot of space.A ten gallon aquarium, with a breathable lid, can be an adequate space for one.
* lower maintenance for cleaning and attending to their home, weekly cleanings
* They tend not bite, but often when scared or frightened will urinate on you!
* They are very active and can be alot of fun to observe and watch
* They are more of a solitary hamster, so having one, instead of pairs can be suitable.
* Compared to a dog, they are Fairly inexpensive to maintain.
Some of the Cons of ownership:
* As the female is the territorial one, she could attack, hurt or even kill a male, best to have a backup cage!
* As they are extremely quick and did I say extremely fast, this can make it difficult to handle and they could easily jump or fall out of your hand. Adult supervision is a must..
* They are very agile, they can easily escape, especially from a cage with bars
* In some states owing a Chinese dwarf hamster is illegall, so be aware of your zoning bylaws before hand

Dwarf Hamster How much bedding should I use?
As dwarf hamsters are burrowers by nature, bedding or substrate, will be of benefit to them and help satisfy their need to burrow.
If you scatter approximately 2 inches all over the floor of their cage, they will move it about to please themselves and make a cosey nest. It’s best to use a wood based bedding, but avoid cedar products as this can make your dwarf hamster ill.

Dwarf Hamster Aquarium – Not just for fish!
Yes you can use the same type of aquarium that you would normally use for fish – less the fish and water!
There are three common types of aquarium materials, glass or plastic or Plexiglas.
- Use at least a 10 gallon aquarium and use a larger aquarium if you are housing two dwarf hamsters or have a mom with a new litter of pups.
There are a few benefits using an aquarium for you pet’s habitat:
- The smooth and often tall sides make it more difficult to escape
- You can visually see your pet and visa versa
When using an aquarium there are two types of material construction commonly used, glass or plastic.
- Glass, although it is heavier, doesn’t scratch should you pet decide to try to dig it’s way out
- Plastic on the other hand is lighter but in time will scratch.
- Plexiglas is a great medium, light, easy to move around and less breakable than glass.
Keep in mind if you use an aquarium that a breathable lid will be required!
There are a couple of types available, plastic construction with holes or screen lid.
There are benefits for using a lid:
- help from other things falling in your pets
- ward off attempted escapes.
When you use an aquarium, keep out of direct sunlight as it can heat up the air inside quickly making it unsafe environment for your pet.
By using Velcro pads, allows you to attach their water bottle and remember to do it at a suitable height for your pet. You can also find water bottles that are designed to hook from the top of an aquarium at your pet store.
It’s always ideal to keep safety in mind when choosing a location for your pet’s home by keeping directly away from drafts, heaters, air vents and direct sunlight. By using this type of housing provides a great opportunity to observe your dwarf hamster daily activities and antics through the aquarium wall!
